A monument to someone buried elsewhere, especially one commemorating people who died in a war.

hero of the revolutionary war.
The Ben McMakin Cenotaph sets proudly in front of a trio of Bradford Pear trees. A Marine Major during WWII, McMakin was buried at sea.
Col. (Retired) Roger C. Green, Jr. places a flag honoring our veterans at the cenotaph for Col. Aquilla Whitaker, Revolutionary War hero.
